Rain Dance

When I think specifically of water in transit, I repeatedly return to the image of the temporary contained world of bringing fish home from the pet store in elongated plastic bags of water with air. Like a long singular droplet, a bag of water has become a recurring image in my artwork for decades.

Here in these installations, the water is temporarily suspended: neither allowed to fall immediately or evaporate slowly and rise. Artificially held by plastic, the natural flow of things is impeded. Leveling itself as it waits to move on again, it hangs in balance.

To me, the world is increasingly out of balance. But, I have faith in the natural flow of the world to right itself if we don’t interfere. Unfortunately, our interference over recent centuries requires overdue correction given our intense manipulations. We each need to think deeply about how humans alter the world. Art is one of those alterations. Art doesn’t have to be a permanent object (there is virtue in ephemerality and subtle use of resources), but can be a temporary disturbance to our environment to focus our attention on seeing with clarity and nuance. I invite viewers to ponder these installations as you each wander these paths. Think of the gush and trickle of time. Think of water waiting to cascade again to bring life, to cleanse.
